Theft was a crime that involved stealing something.
There were a wide variety of types of theft, such as burglary, robbery and others. Theft was one of the most common crimes in the world, and many criminals committed such crimes to attain wealth or to survive.
Some who stole could be low-life evil doers, but others may be in desperate need materially. Whatever the case may be, theft was considered a crime in either case.
