Gold is one of the most valuable metals on Earth. Many criminals have plotted to steal gold on numerous occasions, just because it is so valuable. The metal exists on Krypton as well, in fact, Gold Kryptonite is capable of taking Superman's powers away.
Hank and Ben were a couple of criminals who used a special blue beam to extract quarks from gold, rendering it a worthless metal.[2]
