Green Lantern was a title given to every Intergalactic Space Patrolmen, which served as police officers of the Green Lantern Corps.
The title apparently has nothing to do with an Intergalactic Space Patrolman's rank, because every Patrolman is referred to as a Green Lantern, however, not every member of the Green Lantern Corps is referred to as Green Lantern, for example, the Oans, who serve as the leaders of the Corps, are referred to as Guardians.
It should also be noted, that Alan Scott, a member of the Justice Society of America, also used the title Green Lantern as his superhero codename.
