History[]

Earth 1956[]

When Batman, Robin (both in the Bat-Rocket) and Black Vulcan were responding to a Trouble Alert they received that was a distress call from Shuttle Colony 2; they saw the danger that the space shuttle was in, because an alien organism that resembled slime was eating away at the hull of the space ship. Black Vulcan used his electrical attack to blast the green, alien goo, but it was ineffective. Instead, it made it worse, because the creature then split into two separate beings. At that, Black Vulcan said: "Thunder of Thor! It split in two!!"[1]

Earth-616[]

Thor (Earth-616)

Thor after defeating Captain Marvel.[2]

On this Earth, Thor's costume was considerably different than in most other continuities. Although he still had a red cape, his helmet was considerably different, and rather than a blue and yellow costume, he had a blue-green, red and brown costume with a yellow spiked gauntlet and silver armor.

Obviously, he still carried his hammer and had all of the same super powers; and his physical appearance, as far as his long, flowing blond hair and other features, were more or less the same; although his hairstyle was a bit wilder, more in tune to the 1990s.

In 1996, an alien race previously unknown called The Brothers began to quarrel among themselves. One brother represented this Earth, while the other represented New Earth. This quarrel came to a point where they decided to turn it into all-out war. They both agreed that the combatants in their war would be their own Earth's very own champions; most of whom were super powered beings. The losing side would then be bound to allow their universe to be destroyed.

Among the many selected from both Earths to fight each other was Thor, who was chosen to fight New Earth's Captain Marvel. Upon facing each other, they greet each other as if men of peace. Both hating the idea of engaging in war against the other, as neither of them were evil. Still, they understood that their own worlds were at stake, and one of them had to be defeated in order for the other universe to survive.

Prior to their battle, since they both possessed the powers of the gods, they both knelt to their knees and prayed. They begin their battle at an amusement park, where a couple of carnies were trying to get their customers to place bets on who would win, Thor or Captain Marvel. Captain Marvel punched Thor in the face, saying how instead of fighting they should be finding a way to get the Brothers to get along peacefully. Thor whacked Captain Marvel with his hammer, telling him that he agreed, but if they refused to battle, they wouldn't have the time to search for that solution.

The blow from Thor's hammer sent Captain Marvel flying into the side of a Ferris Wheel. Thor then told Captain Marvel that he would welcome his surrender, so that he wouldn't have to harm him further. Marvel then told him he had the power of Zeus and Hercules, and then he tossed the Ferris Wheel at him, but Thor smacked it with his hammer, sending it right back down toward Captain Marvel, and it slammed into him, Captain Marvel was in no real danger, he knew that he could have moved the debris of the Ferris Wheel on top of him with his super strength. But still, it would have slowed him down enough to where Thor could've came in for the assault, so instead of allowing the debris to temporarily trap him, he simply said "Shazam," so as to turn back into Billy Batson, making him smaller so that he could fit through the debris of the Ferris Wheel.

He then repeats the word, in the hopes of being transformed back into Captain Marvel. But Thor tosses his hammer, which strikes the lightning that was to strike him, and it ends up tossing the hammer elsewhere, and causing both of them to hit the ground. Thor was only momentarily stunned, but Billy Batson was rendered unconscious, making Thor the winner. Still, his hammer was lost.

It was Wonder Woman of New Earth who would soon find the hammer, and she was actually considered worthy to lift it, and she was gifted by the Asgardian Gods in a jolt of lightning at around the same time she was chosen to fight Storm. She was even granted powerful Norse armor.[3]

  • Thor made his first appearance in Venus # 1 (November 1950)[4], but the character as he is best known would debut in Journey Into Mystery # 83 (August 1962)[5]
